What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session

“Make memories that feel like you.”

Planning your family photo session is exciting—but let’s be real, figuring out what everyone’s going to wear can feel… a little overwhelming. You’re not alone in that! After photographing so many San Luis Obispo family photo sessions across the Central Coast, I’ve learned that outfits make a big difference—not just in how your photos look, but in how confident and comfortable you feel.

So, take a deep breath. I’m here to walk you through it with my go-to tips for choosing outfits you’ll love on camera and in real life.

Tips To Make Your Family Photoshoot Smooth

Start with a color palette -

We can officially retire the all-white shirts and jeans combo. Instead, think coordinating rather than matching. The colors that look best are earthy neutrals, soft blues, warm burgundies, or muted pastels. These tones look timeless in family portraits and let each person’s personality shine. This works whether you’re planning beach family photos in Pismo Beach or a cozy in-home session.

Tip: Make use of the "3-color rule" by selecting one accent color, one secondary color, and one dominant color. For instance, cream, olive green, and blush pink. This will add diversity without causing conflict.

Consider your location + season -

Are you planning a family photo session on the windswept shores of a beach or amid the undulating vineyards of a valley? Select outfits that complement the location, as your family photographer (ME!) likely picked it for the best background and lighting.

  • For a beach location, go for light, airy fabrics in whites, soft blues, and sandy beiges.
  • For an urban location, go for jewel tones or bold neutrals like black, navy, or charcoal.
  • For a nature-friendly location, go for earth tones like terracotta, sage, or rust.

And remember—dress for the season! Layers and cozy textures in fall/winter, airy fabrics and lighter silhouettes in spring/summer will keep you comfortable and looking great.

Let mom pick her outfit first -

Here’s my best-kept secret: when Mom feels amazing, it shows in the whole session. Start with something that makes you feel beautiful and confident—maybe a flowy dress with a little movement, or a textured sweater you love. Then, build the rest of the family photo outfits around it.

Tip: Confidence is the best outfit. Therefore, steer clear of anything that makes you feel self-conscious, such as clingy fabrics or ill-fitting clothes.

Mix patterns + textures (but keep it balanced)-

Make a difference by wisely choosing the right patterns. Keep your family photo ensembles balanced while adding depth with florals, stripes, or subdued plaids.

  • Stick to one or two patterns in the group.
  • To add variation, use textures like knit sweaters, linen shirts, or embroidered details.
  • Steer clear of giant graphics or logos that will distract from your faces, and keep patterns subdued.

Choose outfits that move with you -

Some of my favorite family photography moments happen when kids run, dresses catch the wind, or you’re all snuggled together. Flowy skirts, open cardigans, or wide-leg pants can make those moments feel even more magical on camera.

Accessorize thoughtfully -

Accessories are like the finishing touch—layered necklaces, a wide-brim hat, a soft scarf. Just keep them subtle so they enhance rather than steal the show. Shoes matter too! Skip the neon sneakers and flip-flops, and go for neutral sandals, loafers, boots, or flats that match the rest of your family portrait outfits.

Also, don't forget to choose the right pair of shoes. Steer clear of too-casual flip-flops and neon sneakers. Instead, choose sandals, loafers, flats, or neutral boots that go well with the ensemble.

Plan ahead (and check the details) -

Don’t leave outfits to the morning of your session. A few days before your family photo session, try everything on, check for wrinkles or stains, and make sure buttons and zippers are working. You’ll feel so much more relaxed knowing it’s all ready to go.

Keep kids comfortable -

Happy kids = happy photos. Choose clothes they can move in and that won’t itch, pinch, or overheat them.

Tip: Don't forget backups! With small children, a change of clothes, wipes, or favourite snacks can be invaluable.

Keep it timeless -

Trends come and go, but your family photos will be on your walls for years. Go for pieces that will still look beautiful 10 years from now—like maxi dresses, button-down shirts, chinos, cozy cardigans, or simple boots.

Trust your photographer -

I’ve helped countless families on the Central Coast choose outfits for their photos, so if you’re stuck, bring a couple of options to your session or send me photos beforehand. I’ll help you pick what works best for your location and the light we’ll be shooting in.

Bonus: Tips for a Smooth, Happy Session

Now that you have the family photo outfits figured out, here are some pointers for a successful family photo session:

  • Eat before the shoot so no one’s running on empty.
  • Arrive early to give yourself time to settle in.
  • Talk to your kids about what to expect so they’re prepared (and maybe a little excited).
  • Focus on each other, not the camera—real smiles and moments happen when you’re just being you.
  • Embrace the chaos—sometimes the “imperfect” moments make the best family portraits.

Wrapping Up -

Choosing what to wear for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful. The right clothing brings out your family’s personality and connection without taking attention away from what really matters—you.
